Director of Information Technology | Grand Rapids, MI

The Director of Information Technology will lead Koniag Tech’s internal IT strategy and operations during a period of significant acquisition-driven growth. This leader will own the technology roadmap, budget, service delivery, vendor relationships, and integration of acquired IT environments.

The role combines strategic leadership with hands-on technical execution. The successful candidate will work alongside our existing IT Systems Administrator, partner with end-user support and cybersecurity delivery leaders, and build a sustainable internal IT function. This person must be comfortable balancing leadership responsibilities with direct execution, prioritizing business and employee needs, and working pragmatically in an environment where internal tools and processes may need further development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain an internal IT roadmap aligned with business growth and acquisition plans.
  • Own reliable, secure, and cost-effective internal IT operations, including infrastructure, identity and access, endpoints, collaboration platforms, and employee support.
  • Lead IT acquisition assessments and integration planning, including inventories, dependencies, risks, costs, and migration sequencing.
  • Establish a target technology environment and execute phased migrations that maintain business continuity.
  • Personally contribute to technical assessments, troubleshooting, solution design, and critical implementation work rather than relying solely on delegation.
  • Prioritize enabling employees and delivery teams by removing roadblocks, providing practical support, and ensuring internal IT services help the business serve its clients effectively.
  • Manage IT budgets, vendors, licensing, assets, and service agreements.
  • Partner with cybersecurity leadership to define responsibilities for internal security controls, remediation, incident response, and applicable compliance requirements.
  • Establish documentation, change management, backup and recovery practices, and service performance measures while balancing process maturity with immediate operational needs.
  • Develop the existing IT Systems Administrator and recommend the appropriate mix of employees, shared internal resources, and outside specialists.
  • Identify opportunities to improve internal systems and processes while recognizing when practical workarounds or phased improvements are necessary to maintain business momentum.
  • Communicate priorities, costs, integration progress, and risks clearly to executive leadership.

Required Experience

  • 8+ years of progressive experience in IT operations, infrastructure, or systems administration, including experience leading IT functions or major IT initiatives.
  • Recent hands-on technical experience with infrastructure, cloud environments, identity and access management, endpoint management, and collaboration platforms.
  • Experience managing IT operations in a small or midsize organization, ideally in a growing or acquisition-driven environment with evolving processes and limited internal resources.
  • Experience managing IT budgets, vendors, licensing, technology assets, and external service providers.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance hands-on technical work with leadership, prioritization, and team development.
  • Experience implementing or improving IT security controls, business continuity, backup and recovery, documentation, and change management practices.
  • Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain technical risks, business impacts, costs, and priorities to executive leadership and nontechnical stakeholders.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience supporting a distributed workforce or a professional services organization.
  • Experience integrating multiple acquired companies with different technology environments, vendors, processes, and levels of IT maturity.
  • Experience building or standardizing internal IT operations while maintaining responsive support for employees and client-facing teams.
  • Relevant technical certifications or formal education in information technology, computer science, or a related field.
